Mr. Mustafa Varank, the Minister of Industry and Technology, announced that a total of 290.014 domestic industrial property applications were filed to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT) in 2022.
According to the Bloomberg HT News of January 30, 2023, the main points and breakdowns stated by the Minister were as follows:
The number of patent applications to the TURKPATENT increased by 7% between 2021 and 2022, to record levels of 9.009 domestic applications in 2022.
Utility model applications increased by 25% to record levels of 5.502 applications in 2022.
Trademark applications increased by 12% to 197.235 applications in 2022.
Design applications also increased by 32% between 2021 and 2022, to 78.268 applications.
For the first time in the patent register, the number of patent applications filed by domestic applicants surpassed the number of those filed by foreign applicants in Turkiye.
The Minister highlighted the fact that “Turkiye has now gained great momentum in terms of IP culture and innovation capacity. These good results and records in the field of industrial property encourage us even more for the future, but we do not find these numbers sufficient when we consider the potential of our country. In this sense, we will continue to support comprehensively the breakthroughs of our domestic and national enterprises towards more successful R&D activities and innovation capacity".
